Glyndwr Racecourse Receives Safety Certificate

Fans of Wrexham Football Club can be assured their stadium is in good hands after Wrexham Council’s Public Protection Department transferred the sports ground’s Safety Certificate to Glyndwr Innovations Ltd.

As a designated sports ground Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium is required to have a general safety certificate which specifies the type of spectator events the ground can be used for. It sets the maximum safe capacity and contains terms and conditions required for the safety of spectators.

The ground is allowed to be used for football, rugby union, rugby league and similar field sports. Other uses of the ground such as music events would require a special safety certificate.

Until recently the holder of the Certificate was Wrexham Football Club and Glyndwr University who now own the Stadium applied to transfer the certificate to a new holder, Glyndwr Innovations Ltd, a subsidiary of the University.

The Council had to determine if the proposed holder was a “qualified person” and the management arrangements for Glyndwr Innovations Ltd met the critieria and the license was able to be transferred to them.

The Mayor, Cllr Ian Roberts, was on hand to officially hand over the certificate and he said:

“It is good to see the Racecourse Stadium, which is such an important to asset to Wrexham in such safe hands. It is the only designated sports ground in the County Borough and it is reassuring to see its future looking more secure.”

Presentation of the safety certificate follows considerable investment by Glyndŵr University in upgrading the stadium, including repairs to spectator seating and refurbishments of the 1873 suite and hospitality boxes.

Jo Smith, Safety, Health and Environment Manager, said: “We are delighted to receive the safety certificate. The Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium is entering an exciting phase in its history at a promising time for sport in north Wales both on and off the pitch.

“Glyndwr University is committed to providing the best possible match day experience for spectators and this certificate provides reassurance that their safety is our number one priority.”

The certificate will be reviewed on an annual basis.
