Glyndwr University to Launch a Degree in Business Psychology

Glyndwr University logoGlyndwr University will launch a postgraduate psychology degree to develop and motivate the next generation of business managers.

The new MSc Business Psychology is aimed at prospective students and companies interested in training staff to deal with conflict resolution, risk management and other skills critical to commercial growth.

Programme leader Vicki Woodward, a senior lecturer at the Wrexham institution, said there is evidence of a growing demand for business psychologists in industry and government sectors, to coach teams, motivate employees with engagement and teamwork, help with health and safety issues and identify marketing strategies.

There is also an increasing need for them to train auditors or risk managers who make decisions about money lending as, according to research, 70% UK adults have financial difficulties impacting economic growth.

“The programme is designed to meet the needs of the jobs market, particularly for coaching and leadership within the world of business,” said Vicki.

“It is aimed at those who have a good undergraduate degree (2:1 or 2:2) in a related field such as psychology or business, and who are thinking about professional or personal development of psychology within a business or management environment.

“There is also an opportunity within the programme to specialise in fields where professional accreditation may be gained, for example, Psychometrics levels one and two, or Institute of Leadership and Management.”

She added: “Since the economic downturn there has been much more emphasis on psychological behaviour and the impact this can have on marketing and business decisions, which is why this course is so relevant.”

Delivered face to face, the programme is offered on a full-time basis over 12 months or a part time basis over three years.

It specifically aims to equip students with knowledge and critical skills to practice psychology in the field of business and management, and throughout the programme, students are guided through the development of a competent set of research skills which could enable them to conduct independent research to a publishable standard.

Among the core modules to be completed are engagement, teamwork and wellbeing; leadership and ethics in practice, and coaching psychology. Other options include consumer and marketing psychology and conflict resolution: negotiation.
