Staff at Caerphilly county borough council have been taking part in a series of special training sessions to raise awareness about the small steps that can help make a big difference to energy consumption levels.

The council’s Energy Management Team have provided customised energy awareness training for staff from a range of service areas including leisure centres and schools.

Cllr Colin Mann, CCBC cabinet member for resources, said, “We can all play a part in helping to reduce energy costs and sometimes making minor adjustments can contribute to significant savings over the course of a year. We need staff to be as responsible in the workplace as they would be in their own homes. Hopefully these important messages will spread out from the workplace to family and friends so that we can all do our bit to help the environment and cut energy costs.”

The council spent around £3.1 million on energy bills between October 07 and September 08. The Carbon Trust estimates that around 21% of energy used in the workplace is wasted therefore promoting energy awareness in the workplace is a critical means of reducing costs.

The council is also developing an innovative new campaign called ‘Switch to Save’ as part of an internal communications drive. The campaign will underline the organisation’s commitment to sustainability and will act as a reminder to all staff that they should consider issue such as energy consumption and carbon emissions in everything they do.
