Caerphilly’s only A+ energy rated school, Greenhill Primary School has officially opened its doors.
The Education Minister Leighton Andrews joined the Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cllr Vera Jenkins to celebrate the official opening recently, in a launch event which was led by pupils in years five and six from the school.
Greenhill Primary School has already received accolades for being one of the most sustainable primary schools in the country and has scooped 2 nationally recognised awards for its ‘green’ features.
The £3.95million School won a ‘Sustainability Award’ at this year’s Consortium of Local Authorities in Wales (CLAW) Awards 2011. This latest honour closely follows the ‘Low/Zero Carbon Award’ at the recent Constructing Excellence in Wales 2011 awards.
Cllr Colin Mann, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member responsible for Sustainability said, “Seeing this wonderful school in all its glory, together with these national accolades for sustainability really reinforces how we at Caerphilly County Borough Council are leading the way in ensuring sustainable, energy efficient buildings, which will be fit for purpose for generations to come”.
The school has a highly insulated external envelope, four wind turbines and an array of solar panels, which turn daylight into energy.

Cllr Mann continued, “I am confident that this fantastic school building will help the children of Greenhill Primary School to flourish and become the new citizens of our county borough, who have a real understanding of why we have to look after our planet and its resources properly”.
The brand new Greenhill Primary School building has come to fruition thanks to a Welsh Government grant.
