Griffiths: ‘Progressive’ Welsh Government Programme

Assembly Member for Wrexham, Lesley Griffiths has welcomed outlines of the Labour-led Government programme which have been announced in the Senedd.

Details of the Welsh Government’s five year programme of legislation were revealed   yesterday in a statement from the First Minister, Carwyn Jones.

These included pledges to provide increased numbers of PCSOs, improved GP, increased funding for Schools, and improved training and employment prospects for young people.

The First Minister  also spelt out a comprehensive review of the litigation surrounding Social Care and plans to bring forward the Sustainability Bill, and a Bill to bring forward the Children’s Rights measure.

Lesley Griffiths welcomed the programmes calling it a ‘strong, progressive  programme’ of ‘mature  Government’, saying:

“This programme has been voted for by the Welsh people – who will be pleased to see Labour bringing forward manifesto commitments alongside a continued focus on delivering public service improvements, economic growth and creating opportunities for everyone.

“This programme of Government faces constraints, however, not least the near one billion pound reduction in the Welsh Budget announced last year by George Osborne. Despite this we will work to deliver public service improvements for the people of Wales.

“I believe what the First Minister has announced is a strong, progressive programme, which bears the hallmark of mature governance. We are not making legislation for legislations sake -we are taking action in the interest of the people of Wales.”

Following this May’s elections, Welsh Labour secured half of all seats in the Assembly, enough to form an all-Labour Government.  However, to bring forward its full legislative programme Welsh Labour may need to cooperate with other parties.
