Griffiths Backs Report on Wales’ Public Services

Lesley_GriffithsWrexham Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths has welcomed the publication of an independent report on Wales’ public services.

The Welsh Government established a commission, chaired by Sir Paul Williams, in April 2013 to independently review all aspects of Wales’ public services to see how they are currently working and how they can be better improved in the future.

The Commission on Public Service Governance and Delivery has spent eight months collecting evidence to produce a robust report and develop an optimal model of public service governance and delivery.

A major recommendation proposed by the commission in their report suggests councils in Wales should merge leaving 10, 11 or 12 local authorities, rather than the current 22. From a local perspective, the report argues Wrexham and Flintshire Councils should merge to create one local authority.

Lesley Griffiths, AM for Wrexham commented:

“Last year, the Welsh Government commissioned the Williams report to examine the most effective way of delivering public services in Wales.”

“This is by no means a straightforward task but the Welsh Government realises the need for progressive change and an effective response to help maintain local government in the future.”

“It is clear the current structure of 22 local authorities is unsustainable yet it remains essential local government is empowered to improve performance and accountability.”

“Every day, people heavily rely on key public services so it is crucial they are protected and supported. Any changes must ensure local authorities deliver the best possible public services for the people of Wales.”

“The Welsh Government will now analyse the report thoroughly and respond in due course.”
