Grit bins refilled in the city

Grit bins in Swansea are being refilled in a bid to help with the big thaw in the city.

Many side streets in Swansea are still icy and treacherous underfoot and Swansea Council is hoping the refilled grit bins will help improve the situation.

The Council is continuing to grit around 45 percent of the entire road network in the city, keeping priority routes for buses and emergency vehicles open.

So far, over 1,600 tonnes of salt grit have been spread across main roads since the cold weather began.

Carl Humphrey, Head of Highways in Swansea Council, said, “We have been able to restock our supplies of salt grit during the last few days and as well as priority routes we are aiming to refill grit bins in communities throughout Swansea.”

The Council recently received complaints from residents who claimed that some grit bins were being abused with large vans pulling up and emptying the bins of their entire contents.

Mr Humphrey added, “The supply of grit in communities is for everyone to use and we would hope that this service will not be abused by a small number of individuals.

“We expect the cold weather to continue for some time and we would urge residents to use grit supplies sparingly.”
