Gwynedd air target club – £400 worth of training up for grabs

The Gwynedd air target club is an inclusive air target shooting club based at Porthmadog – it is unique in north Wales and boasts five ranges with high quality specialist equipment.

This ambitious club wants to expand its membership and needs new volunteers – it already has six active range officers who are qualified to run the club, but they are keen to find more. The Gwynedd air target club meets weekly on Wednesdays at Clwb Chwaraeon Madog in Porthmadog.

Marcus Politis from Gwynedd Council’s Sports Development team who is a Disability Sport Cymru Development Officer in the county said:

“This is fantastic club, which offers great development opportunities for anyone interested in target shooting – it is open to disabled and non-disabled members and is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who wants to become a volunteer at the club or for those keen to become a member.

“The club wants to train up more range officers and train suitable candidates to become shooting coaches on the club coach award  – if you are chosen to become a volunteer at the club, you will receive suitable training worth over £400. I would urge anyone who requires further information to contact me for a chat.”

Matt Skelhon the Paralympic shooting champion recently attended the club. On his visit, he endorsed the club set-up as it provides shooting facilities which were on par with where he trains back home.

Matt said: “Three years out from Beijing I had never shot competitively, yet I won gold equalling the world record. If you are determined then there is absolutely enough time to get yourself involved now and go for gold.”

As well as requiring new volunteers, the club is also keen to welcome new members. The club’s aim is to expand its programme by eventually opening on a second evening during the week. It can even cater for groups such as cubs, scouts, cadets, girl guides, or any junior and adult groups in the area which can be taster or regular sessions.

This competitive Olympic and Paralympic focus sport is the only development of its kind in north Wales with a vigorous coach education plan in place and is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who has the passion or commitment to be part of this exiting initiative.
