Gwynedd Council has joined forces with a community group to tackle littering problems at Abercaseg, Bethesda, resulting in two skips of waste being removed from the area.
The environmental action day was organised by Gwynedd Council’s Tidy Town initiative working in partnership with the Balchder Bro Ogwen community group and North Wales Police. Gwynedd Council’s Community Gangs were also working on the project.
Iona Thomas, Gwynedd Council’s Tidy Towns Officer, said:
“This area has become a fly-tipping hot spot over the last few years and we are delighted to be able to work with the local community to make the area clean and tidy once more. We filled two skips with rubbish, which included tyres, sofas, carpets, rubble and garden waste.
“Gwynedd Council officers will be monitoring the site in the future to make sure it stays in a good condition for local people to enjoy.”
Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Senior Environment Portfolio Leader, said:
“Fly-tipping is a serious environmental crime which poses a health risk to people and to wildlife; damages our environment and spoils our enjoyment of open spaces.
“By working in partnership with groups such as Balchder Bro Ogwen we can really make a difference to people’s lives.
“I would urge everyone in Gwynedd to make sure they dispose of their waste in a safe and legal manner.”
Dumping rubbish is illegal and Gwynedd Council’s Enforcement Officers can issue £75 on-the-spot fines for fly-tipping offences. Those accused of more serious waste disposal and fly-tipping offences could face a court summons and fines running into thousands of pounds.
