Gwynedd Council welcomes £425 million Welsh high speed broadband announcement

Gwynedd Council’s Economy Cabinet Member Councillor John Wynn Jones has welcomed the news that Wales is set to become a global leader in the deployment of high speed broadband as the result of an ambitious project announced today by the Welsh Government and BT.

Councillor Jones, who is also the Chairman of the Council’s Digital Gwynedd project team, said:

“Through the Digital Gwynedd initiative, Gwynedd Council and its partners are working to ensure that Gwynedd becomes one of the first areas in Wales to benefit from next generation broadband and that local residents, businesses and service providers are ready to take advantage the wonderful opportunities this new provision will bring.

“We strongly welcome today’s announcement that the Welsh Government and BT have come to an agreement to deliver high speed broadband to parts of the country not covered by commercial plans; and wish to emphasise that we’re ready here in Gwynedd to support the deployment and exploitation of this technology which will give all parts of the area the chance to make the most of our wonderful assets.

“As a Council we are already working closely with the Welsh Government on a number of digital projects – including the designation of the Snowdonia Enterprise Zone as a location for digital enterprises and green technology – and we will be seeking an early meeting with the Government and BT to see how we can work together to move this vital agenda forward here in Gwynedd.”
