Have a safe Christmas in Wrexham

The Safe Wrexham ‘Think Safe, Drink Safe’ Christmas campaign to ensure people have enjoyable and safe nights out in Wrexham over the festive season, is underway.

Funded by Wrexham Community Safety Partnership and Health Challenge Wrexham, the innovative campaign brings together a number of local partners pushing hard-hitting messages about enjoying a safe night out by thinking safe and drinking safe.

This year the campaign will provide people with a free Safe Wrexham – Think Safe. Drink Safe application for downloading on to mobile phones – packed full of tips and advice for staying safe on a night out.

The app includes a ‘Find my nearest…’ feature to help people navigate their way around Wrexham town centre, sensible drinking advice to help people calculate how much alcohol they are drinking and know how much is too much, and access to a range of emergency numbers, should they need them.

Town Centre Inspector Alex Goss said: “We want everyone to enjoy themselves and stay safe in Wrexham over Christmas. We know that over this period, people tend to drink more than normal and our message is very simple: don’t over do it, look after yourself and each other, and make sure you get home safely.

“We would also encourage people to drink responsibly and be mindful that excessive drinking can affect behaviour and lead to serious consequences. We want to send out a clear warning that anyone behaving irresponsibly will be dealt with quickly, as anti-social behaviour and violence will not be tolerated in Wrexham.”

Acting Inspector Darren Whibberley added: “As part of Wrexham Community Safety Partnership we aim to provide an environment in which people can enjoy local attractions. Safe Wrexham is about encouraging responsible attitudes to alcohol, providing a high level of service to anyone who needs help or assistance, keeping the wider community safe and allowing our local businesses to prosper.”

Councillor Bob Dutton said: “Each year we encourage people to enjoy the festive season, and to stay safe by drinking sensibly and knowing their limits, but this year we wanted to do more.

“I would strongly encourage everyone to download the free ‘Think Safe, Drink Safe’ application onto their mobile phone and to carry it with them at all times – including when they’re out drinking.

“Our hope is that this will provide people with added reassurance about their safety, or the safety of a loved one, when going out in Wrexham.”
