Helen Mary Jones: First test of respect for Welsh Devolution

Plaid AM Helen Mary Jones has described passing the Housing Legislative Competence Order as one of the first real tests of the ConDem Coalition’s respect for Welsh Devolution.

Ms Jones was speaking during a short debate in the National Assembly on ‘The Right to a Decent Home’. During the debate, she called on the Tory side of the new Westminster coalition to show wisdom and respect by passing the Housing LCO.

The Assembly Government’s Housing LCO failed to get through the final stages at Westminster following a refusal of support by Conservative MP’s.

Helen Mary Jones said:

“Both Parties forming the Westminster Coalition have committed to respecting devolution, indeed the Liberal Democrats say they support further devolution. So let us now put that commitment to the test.

“I know the One Wales Government intends to press the new Westminster Government to pass the Housing Legislative Competence Order at once. Will the Conservative side of the Westminster coalition show the wisdom, respect and seriousness they have promised and allow it to pass?

“Ultimately the price will be high for some of the most needy in our communities if they fail to do so – but the Tories and their new coalition partners will be accountable for their actions.”
