Highway improvements move forward

Work starts this year on the next phase of a major highway improvement scheme that will help cut congestion in Ystrad Mynach and improve traffic flow around the new multi million pound hospital development.

The first phase of works, which involved the construction of a new access bridge to the hospital site from the A469, was completed at the end of last year – on budget and ahead of schedule.

The next phase includes the construction of a dedicated ‘slip road’ which will provide a direct link from the A469 Llanbradach bypass to the A472 into Maesycwmmer. This will ease congestion at the roundabout at the top of the dual carriageway (near the New Cottage dance centre) and will improve access to the new hospital site.

In order to allow the works to start later this year, a number of trees will need to be removed over the next few weeks. The council is keen to minimise any disturbance to wildlife, therefore the tree clearance needs to be undertaken now before the bird nesting season starts.

Prior to Christmas, to prepare for the site clearance works, the section of the A469 between Cwm Du and Duffryn roundabouts had a revised temporary traffic management layout to allow the scheme to progress. Motorists are reminded that there is a 40mph speed restriction in this area. Additional off-peak temporary traffic management arrangements will be required to undertake clearance works along the A472.
