Highway Winter Service Update

A message from Stuart Davies – Head of Highways & Infrastructure

Conwy’s winter maintenance teams are salting primary routes.

We didn’t run out rocksalt in Conwy last winter and we were able to offer assistance to other authorities, but stocks did run low.

As a result we increased our stocks as part of our preparations for this winter.

At the start of the season we had 10,500 tonnes in stock, we have already used over 2,000 tonnes.

We also placed an order a couple of months ago for approximately 2,000 tonnes of rocksalt to be delivered in early December.  It is possible that the supplier may not be able to meet our order because of the severe conditions in other areas of the UK.

So, although we were very well prepared, we have been hit by very cold weather much earlier than would be expected and all authorities will need to take measures to conserve salt supplies for the winter ahead.

Currently, Conwy’s winter maintenance teams are salting primary routes and responding to Emergency Services, Social Services and animal welfare requests.

In addition, we have had thefts of salt from the salt bins and salt piles located around the county.  These thefts are selfish and prevent community minded people from treating local problem areas.
