Hip Hop goes to school

Demand among young people for hip hop dance classes has led to the launch of an unique teacher training course in Pembrokeshire this spring.

The Hip Hop and Street Dance teachers training course will be the first of its kind in the County.

Run by Pembrokeshire County Council’s sports development and leisure teams, the course is funded by the Sports Council for Wales.

It also has the support of Arts Care Gofal Celf-an innovative arts organisation based in West Wales.

“We’re delighted to be able to put on this dance course,” said Councillor Rob Lewis, Cabinet Member for Sport and Leisure.

“Dance engages large numbers of girls and boys in healthy exercise – many of whom would not normally participate in sport,” he said.

“Hip Hop and Street dancing are particularly popular among young people and it’s important that we can offer them classes. By training locally qualified teachers we can put on more classes in our schools, youth clubs and leisure centres.”

The nationally accredited course, which takes place over five Sundays starting from May 9th, is open to over 16 year olds and will be followed by an exam including a practical assessment.

Due to the intensive nature of the course only five places (all fully subsidised) are available. Places will be obtained through an application and interview process only. The deadline date for applications – Friday 9th April.
