Holiday lets firms to be hit with higher rate

Welsh Conservatives today demanded proper support for the tourism sector after it emerged the average business rates rise for self catering holiday accommodation operators will be 55%. The rise comes as a result of revaluation which comes into effect in April.

Shadow Minister for the Economy David Melding AM said:

“At a time when figures show a fall in the number of tourists visiting Wales we need to do everything we can to support the industry.

“Imposing higher business rates on self-catering holiday accommodation operators could see some businesses close, or force prices up which will make Wales a less attractive place to visit.

“Had the Assembly Government adopted Welsh Conservative proposals the vast majority of holiday let operators would pay no business rates at all.

“Instead of supporting the industry, the Labour-Plaid administration is adding to its burden.”
