Six homes in Ely and Canton were raided by police in Cardiff yesterday in a crackdown on drug supply and possession.
Around 50 officers took part in the morning’s activity that resulted in 10 arrests and the recovery of drugs, cash and an imitation firearm.
Significant results include:
- Three carrier bags of drugs found by sniffer dogs concealed in bushes in Ely woods;
- An imitation firearm taken from a property in Ely;
- A mother, son and two daughters arrested for the cultivation of cannabis;
- And two cannabis factories closed down.
Officers were briefed in Fairwater Police Station at 7.30am before carrying on the simultaneous warrants at around 8.15am in Nottage Road, Emblem Close, and three in Heol Diva.
A sixth address was then raided in Lawrenny Avenue, Canton, at around midday, where officers arrested two men after finding around £1,000 worth of cannabis, £500 cash, and a room which had been converted to grow the drug.
Sergeant Ross Crutcher from the Ely Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “There is concern from residents in Caerau and Ely that drug dealing is increasing, so much so that it was made a priority in last month’s Pact meeting.
“We have had lots of anonymous information come through from the community about drug activity and today we have acted upon that information.
“Everybody in Ely could see the amount of police working on the operation and there were lots of people on their doorsteps watching what was taking place.
“I hope this reassures the community that we will act on information received and we will target people who possession, cultivate or supply drugs.”
Three homes in Heol Diva were searched which resulted in two women aged 42 and 33 being arrested and charged with drug offences. In the third house a cannabis factory was found and four people were arrested on suspicion of cultivation of cannabis. They are currently in custody.
In Emblem Close, a 43-year-old woman and 18-year-old man were arrested for possession of cannabis. An imitation firearm was also found.
Acting Superintendent Danny Richards added: “The Neighbourhood Policing Teams in Canton and Ely are very much part of their communities and yesterday’s operation shows what can be achieved when we all work together.”
