Immigration to be discussed at conference fringe meeting

Immigration issues will be discussed during a fringe meeting at Plaid Cymru’s Spring Conference.

The panel at the Wales Strategic Migration Partnership (WSMP) event will include their director Anne Hubbard, South Wales Central AM Leanne Wood and Chris Myant from the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

The event aims to raise awareness of the WSMP and encourage open and honest dialogue about migration issues.

Leanne Wood AM said: “This fringe meeting is very topical because there have been a number of stories in the press recently that suggests the way the UK treats asylum seekers needs vast improvement.

“The account of Louise Perrett’s three-and-a-half months working at the Border Agency Offices in Cardiff made for very unpleasant reading.

“She suggests that racist attitudes are rife within the department and that workers who approve asylum applications are chastised by their colleagues.

“An investigation has been called for and I hope no stone is left unturned in rooting what has been described by Ms Perrett as a racist culture.

“We also have the looming spectre of the English Defence League which has been organising marches up and down the UK. Although their events in Swansea, Newport and Wrexham last year were not a successful for them, we cannot rest on our laurels. South Wales Police recently arrested five people for attempting to organise an anti-Muslim march in the Rhondda.

“I hope the fringe meeting will go some way to promoting a greater understanding of asylum seekers and the struggles they face on a daily basis.”
