In memory of John

A new footway dedicated to a former Chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council was opened at the weekend.

Llwybr John links the villages of Clunderwen and Llandysilio and is named in memory of the late John Thomas.

The much-loved Maenclochog councillor was the first Chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council on local government reorganisation in 1995/6 and took up the post again in 2004/05

His widow Olwen officially opened the three quarter mile-long footway at a small ceremony in Clunderwen on Sunday attended by family members, friends and former colleagues.

“John served this area for over 30 years and was very much part of the community – well respected and much loved,” said Councillor Huw George, who now represents Maenclochog.

“The footpath uniting these two villages will enable us all to try and follow in his footsteps.”

Councillor Thomas, who died in 2006 aged 84, was a councillor for 32 years representing the Maenclochog electoral division, which includes Llandysilio, Mynachlog Dddu, Maenclochog, New Moat and – more recently – Clunderwen.

He was a leading member of the former Dyfed County Council and also a member of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority.

Originally from Login, he was involved in agriculture for 40 years and was life President of the Clunderwen Farmers’ Cooperative.

The new £230,000 footway in his memory was funded by the Welsh Assembly Government as part of its programme to improve the A478 from Penblewin roundabout to Cardigan.

Carried out in two phases, the footway was designed by Pembrokeshire County Council and the work was carried out by contractors – S&E Ltd.
