Increasing opportunities for cycling and walking

Cycle and footpaths in the Felinheli area will be significantly improved during November and January as Gwynedd Council carries out extensive improvement works. These works have been made possible with the support of the Welsh Assembly Government.

The main aspects of the work involves significant improvements to the popular Lôn Las Menai recreational route along with a range of minor works locally making the route even more accessible for local residents.

Gwynedd has a network of recreational routes suitable for walking and cycling stretching over 50 kilometres (32 miles) all over the county, open to everyone all year round.

Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Senior Environment Portfolio Leader said:

“The people of Gwynedd tell us time and again that ensuring a clean environment where they have the opportunity to enjoy the open countryside is vitally important to them. It’s therefore encouraging to see that improvement works will soon get underway along this stretch of Lôn Las Menai which is an important part of Gwynedd’s network of walking and cycling routes.”

Gwynedd Council’s Senior Countryside Warden, Mark Balaam, added:

“This work is the start of several exciting projects around y Felinheli. Sections of the original Lôn Las Menai route through Felinheli have seen better days and with increasing demand for such routes to commute to work, school or for leisure, this work will go a long way to ensuring a high standard network.

“Implementing these projects will also be a big step towards completing a route between Bangor and Caernarfon”.

The work will be carried out by Gwynedd Council’s Environmental Service and funded by the Welsh Assembly’s Môn Menai grant scheme
