‘Innovative’ Vale Council praised by Audit Office

Continuing improvements in services provided by the Vale of Glamorgan Council have been welcomed by the Wales Audit Office.

In its annual letter (2008-09), the WAO says the council is making ‘good progress’ in many areas.

The report praises the council for:

  • its positive response to identifying more effective and innovative ways of working;
  • improvements in relation to leadership, performance and financial management in Social Services although the auditors call for further work to implement a commissioning approach to all its services;
  • progress on children’s services;
  • its investment and work in engaging with the public;
  • constructive working relationships between members and officers;
  • its commitment to partnership working, and
  • considerable improvements to management of sickness absence

Council leader Cllr Gordon Kemp, who welcomed the findings of the annual review and inspection, said: “The report recognises the great deal of work that is being undertaken, and which will continue, to ensure that the Vale council remains among the top performing local authorities in Wales.

“It is of immense pleasure that the progress we are making, which reflects a tremendous contribution from all areas of the council, continues to be recognised by the Wales Audit Office.

“Improving the way we work and the services we deliver to our customers will continue to be the key priorities.”
