Isherwood: Call to “unleash potential” of Big Welsh Society

Welsh Conservatives have today called for the Welsh Labour government to ‘unleash the potential of the Big Welsh Society’.

During an Opposition Debate this afternoon, Welsh Conservatives said successful Big Society projects can encourage further local enterprise and promote community spirit.

Shadow Minister for Communities, Mark Isherwood AM, said:

“Trying to improve society by micromanaging from the centre of government simply isn’t working. We need a significant improvement in the way that services are delivered and we’ve got to concentrate on empowering communities – not ignoring them.

“It’s absolutely critical that we move away from the Labour model of the state and the individual, with nothing in-between.

“The Big Society rests on the fact that in our communities, there are individuals, enterprises and charities that are better placed to confront the problems our nation faces.

“Taking power out of the hands of Government, and giving it to the people working on the front line, can help us provide better services more efficiently.

“The UK Government has made it clear that money available through the Big Society bank will be of immense benefit to third sector organisations in Wales.

“It’s time for the Welsh Labour government to recognise the importance of the Big Welsh Society, and act on it.”
