Isle of Anglesey County Council elects new Chairman

The Isle of Anglesey County Council last week (Thursday, May 12th) elected Councillor Gwilym O Jones as its new Chairman.

Cllr Jones has represented the Llanfair-yn-Neubwll ward on the Authority since 1995, having previously served as a member of Gwynedd County Council between 1985 -1996.

Although born in the Bodedern area, he has lived in Caergeiliog for most of his life. An electrician by trade, he works as a Senior Production Technician at Wylfa Power Station.

Commenting after his election, Cllr Jones, said, “I’m already honoured in being able to represent the area where I was born on the County Council.”

“Being elected now as Council Chairman is also a great privilege and I will represent the Island and its residents to the best of my abilities. I look forward to my year in office and undertaking my many civic duties with huge pride.”

Despite his work and Council commitments, Cllr Jones still finds time to play a very active role in the local community. He became a correspondent with ‘Y Rhwyd’ community newspaper in 1979, and is now the chief distributor of the paper.

Cllr Jones is Chairman of Llanfair-yn-Neubwll Community Council, a member and secretary of Seilo Church, Caergeiliog and a member of the Bodedern and Caergeiliog Village Halls Management Committees. He is also a member of the Governing Body of Bodedern Primary School and Bodedern Secondary School, holding the post of Chairman from 1989 – 1999.

Cllr Robert Llewelyn Jones, who represents Holyhead’s Porthyfelin ward, was elected as vice-chairman for 2011/12.
