Wales assistant coach Shaun Edwards has confirmed front row forward Gethin Jenkins, has been withdrawn from the national squad after suffering a calf injury during the Cardiff Blues victory over Toulon in the Amlin Cup Final at Marseilles last Sunday.
He will be out of action for four to six weeks and therefore will not be considered for selection against South Africa at the Millennium Stadium on June 5(ko 2.30) or for the tour to New Zealand later the same month.
Shaun Edwards said: ”Obviously a man of Gethin’s stature as a Lion would be missed by any team but we’re going to move on and look forward with confidence.
“I’m a firm believer that when one door closes another opens for someone else and we’ve got John Yapp and Paul James in the squad. Warren and the rest of us [coaches] will sit down together to consider whether we need to call up another prop forward.
“We are very much looking forward to facing the Springboks and we certainly believe in ourselves as a squad.”
