Jones seeks success for Scarlets

Stephen Jones admits he is on a mission to put the Scarlets back on the map at Ravenhill tonight (Fri).

British Lions star Jones returns to action following an extended 13-week break following the gruelling tour of South Africa where he booted 39 points.

Without the influential fly-half, the Scarlets have suffered three successive defeats and lie one point off the bottom of the Magners League basement.

Now Jones aims to make up for lost time by guiding the Scarlets to their first victory in a month over Ulster.

Jones, 31, said: “I can’t wait to play rugby again because that third Lions Test feels like a long time ago – I’m ready for Ulster.

“Our recent performances have been good but sport is all about winning and that’s the next step for us. It’s our challenge to put the Scarlets back on the map.

“We will keep working hard and hopefully we will get the win. We’ve a lot of local youngsters who have played well and it’s healthy to see them representing the region.”

The Scarlets have won four of their last five league meetings over the Irish province, including a double last season.

But Jones reckons the Welsh region will not find it easy against Brian McLaughlin’s men in Belfast.

Jones said: “It will be a tough game and Ulster are in a transitional process too. Ravenhill is always a challenge and the elements always pose the kickers problems. Hopefully it will stay dry on Friday night.”
