Keep it local in Gwynedd this Christmas

Gwynedd Council is encouraging local people to make the most of the free festive parking in the Council’s car parks and provide a Christmas boost for the county’s shops and traders.

As part of the Christmas campaign, Gwynedd Council is once again providing free parking in all Council car parks between 13 December and 28 December. The aim is to encourage as many people as possible to shop locally and to take advantage of the variety of Christmas gifts on offer here in Gwynedd.

Gwynedd Council Leader, Councillor Dyfed Edwards said:

“Shopkeepers and other retailers have told us that free parking in the run up to Christmas helps to attract more customers to the town centres and leads to an increase in business at this crucial time of year.

“Our message is simple – make the most of the free parking and get shopping in Gwynedd. The festive period is the ideal time to back local businesses and to find all kinds of unique gift ideas.”

Councillor Dewi Lewis, who leads on the Economy and Community for Gwynedd Council, added:

“Independent retailers are the backbone of our town centres and deserve our support. I would urge people who don’t already shop locally to try something different this year, such as local food for the celebrations or an unique gift from Gwynedd’s thriving arts and craft industry.

“I am confident that this decision to offer free Christmas parking will encourage more shoppers to visit our town centres and help Gwynedd’s shops and businesses to have a successful Christmas again this year.”

Councillor Gareth Roberts, who leads on the Environment for Gwynedd Council noted:

“Ensuring that Gwynedd businesses are best placed during difficult times is vital so that we can maintain a strong local economy.

“We hope that the festive free parking along with the continued efforts of the county’s business sector will mean that shoppers from near and far will back Gwynedd’s shops and businesses during the Christmas period.”

Gwynedd Council will be offering free parking in Council car parks between 13 and 28 December 2010.
