Keep Well This Winter

Keep WellOlder people in the Caerphilly county borough are being urged to take a few simple steps to ensure they keep well this winter.

The advice and support will help more local people keep warm, keep well and keep safe throughout the long winter months.

Cllr Lyn Ackerman, CCBC cabinet member for the environmnet said, “It is important to stay fit and healthy throughout the winter months so we are working with Health Challenge Caerphilly to raise awareness about the little things that can help make a big difference. This project provides information and support on staying healthy, useful tips for heating your home effectively, information on the financial support available and steps for preparing your home for the winter.”

Five top tips for keeping well and warm: –

  • Heat your home well. Keep your rooms heated to a temperature between 18-21 degrees c (64-70 degrees F).
  • Dress well for warmth. Several thin layers of clothing will keep you warmer than one thick layer. Cloths made from wool, cotton or fleecy material are best. If you need to go out remember to wrap up warmly and wear a hat.
  • Get financial support. There are grants, benefits and sources of advice available to make your home more energy efficient, improve your heating or help with bills.
  • Eat well. Food is a vital source of energy, which helps to keep your body warm. Try to make sure you have hot meals and drinks regularly throughout the day.
  • Get a flu jab. You can get a free flu jab from your GP if you are over 65, have a long term health condition or are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person.
