Kevin completes marathon trip despite tragic loss

It was 15 days since he set off on his epic journey around Britain, but yesterday RNLI fundraiser Kevin Hancock returned to Mumbles RNLI Lifeboat station.

Kevin set off from Mumbles in a bid to raise £1,000 for the new Mumbles Lifeboat appeal. His journey was tinged with sadness when last Wednesday his lifelong friend and fellow fundraiser Steve Wood passed away. Kevin and Steve were constantly in touch as Kevin ventured around Britain on a 90cc Honda scooter.

Kevin and Steve were life long friends and Kevin decided it would be in Steve’s memory that he would carry on.

Kevin said: “I wanted to visit every lifeboat station in mainland Britain and that’s exactly what I did. There were some fantastic sunsets and sunrises, and beautiful sights along the way. We have an amazing coastline and I met some lovely people, so far the fund is up to £1500 but there’s more to come.”

The RNLI and Mumbles lifeboat crew were very close to Steve following the loss of his son Lee during a fishing accident in 2004. Steve concentrated all of his efforts on raising money for the RNLI at Mumbles, Aberavon, Burry Port and the Lougher inshore rescue.

Kevin is still collecting donations through www.justgiving.com/numbumring

The RNLI has set a £150,000 fundraising target over the next three years towards a new £2.7m Tamar class boat for Mumbles. The Tamar lifeboats are the most advanced vessels operated by the RNLI, providing all weather rescue capabilities and will replace the current Tyne class rescue boat that currently serves Mumbles.
