Kids’ art for YMCA centenary

Pupils from eight primary schools have created pieces of colourful artwork to help celebrate the centenary of Pontypridd YMCA.

The building in Taff Street, Pontypridd, marks its centenary on September 29 this year and local schoolchildren were invited to create art, based on its history. Children worked with artist Craig Lewis, E3+ co-ordinator Hannah Gray and school cluster worker Lindsey Spacey to create the large pieces of art on canvas, based on photographs of YMCA users over the years.

The centenary exhibition was launched by Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Mayor, Cllr Robert Smith.

“Well done to all the young artists who have created these eye-catching works. This is a fantastic way to mark the history of a building which has been at the heart of the community since 1910,” he said.

Schools that took part were: Cilfynydd Primary, Cefn, Craig yr Hesg, Coedylan, Maesycoed, Trehopcyn, Glenffrwd and Trerobart, and students from Pontypridd High School also contributed.

Young musician Ryan Elliott, who has guitar lessons at the building, entertained the audience at the launch.

The pieces will remain on display in the building alongside the original photographs they were based on. YMCA Manager Hayley Fidler said: “The artworks look fantastic and really brighten up the hall.

“Throughout 2010 we will have a wide variety of events celebrating the fantastic achievements of people who have used the YMCA over the years. Why not come along and find out what your own family and friends have achieved here.”

Pontypridd YMCA works with children, young people, and the local community, providing a welcoming community space for all ages. Activities currently held at the building include kickboxing, Shotokan Karate, dance classes, guitar lessons, wrestling training, circuit training and a slimming class.

The YMCA opened in September 1910, built with contributions from local business people. Young people attending over the years have been encouraged to develop their talents and follow their dreams.
