Three Honorary Fellowships were awarded during the University of Wales Lampeter’s Degree Day celebrations on Friday 9 July 2010. The fellowships honour individuals who have made a distinctive contribution to their field or to public life.
Mrs Tricia Carter
Tricia Carter came to Lampeter following a successful career in strategic marketing and business development in the commercial sector.
Tricia joined the Council of the University of Wales Lampeter in 2002. During her tenure she was a member of many committees and served as Vice President and Chair of Council. Tricia played an instrumental role in developing the links with Trinity University College that culminated in Lampeter joining with Trinity to create the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
Tricia stood down from the University Council earlier in 2010 but continues to serve as a Trustee of the University’s Pension Fund.
In addition to her work with the University, Tricia has been Chair of the Ethical Standards Committee of Dyfed-Powys Police Authority, Director of Fair Trade Wales, and Chair of Lampeter Business Club. Together with her husband, Geoff, she runs a specialist nursery that exports South African plants around the world.
Tricia Carter is honoured for her contribution to the University of Wales Lampeter.
Ms Elin Jones AM
Elin Jones grew up on a farm in Llanwnnen, near Lampeter, and has been the Assembly Member for Ceredigion since 1999. Elin started her political career serving on Aberystwyth Town Council from 1992 to 1999 and was the youngest-ever Mayor of Aberystwyth from 1997 to 1998. She was the National Chair of Plaid Cymru between 2000 and 2002.
In the first Welsh Assembly Government elections in 1999, Elin was elected as Assembly Member for Ceredigion and served as Shadow Economic Development Minister during the first term. She retained this portfolio until 2006 when she became Shadow Minister for Environment, Planning & Countryside. Since July 2007, Elin has held the office of Minister for Rural Affairs.
Elin lives in Aberystwyth and enjoys music, film, reading and choral singing. She is honoured for her contribution to the public life of Wales.
Mr Stephen Jones
Stephen Jones is a Welsh international rugby star who has played for Llanelli RFC, Clermont Auvergne, the Scarlets, Wales and the British & Irish Lions. Stephen was captain of the Welsh rugby union team from 2003 to 2007 and is currently 10th in the international all-time list of leading rugby union test point scorers.
Stephen started his rugby career with Wales U21, leading the side to Grand Slam glory, and also captaining Wales at U18 level. He made his international debut in 1998 and is Wales’ second highest point scorer, second to Neil Jenkins. He is also currently in third position as Llanelli and Scarlets’ highest points scorer and needs only 9 further points to surpass the great Phil Bennett.
Having played a major part in Wales’ Grand Slam victories of 2005 and 2008, Stephen has cemented his place as Wales’ number one fly half.
Stephen is honoured for his contribution to the public life of Wales.
