Landscaping plan for former library site

Landscaping work will soon kick-off in the vicinity of a vacant Swansea building.

The former St Thomas library site on Miers Street that lies adjacent to Fabian Way is being cleared thanks to an environmental enhancement scheme.

Works are expected to start next week and should be complete by the end of March.

Swansea Council and The Welsh Assembly Government are behind the project.

The new St Thomas library on Grenfell Park was opened in April 2007 along with the new St Thomas Primary School on the same site.

A reading tunnel for children was among the new features to be introduced as part of a bigger and brighter facility than ever before.

Cllr Gareth Sullivan, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic and Strategic Development, said: “This site is located at a key gateway into the city centre so these enhancement works will give people a better impression of Swansea.

“There are several major regeneration projects ongoing in Swansea that will capture the public’s imagination but environmental improvement schemes of this nature are also important because they help in the process of revitalising communities.

“Disruption will be kept to a bare minimum.”

Jocelyn Davies, Assembly Member and Deputy Minister for Housing and Regeneration, said: “I’m delighted that this disused building, which was becoming an eyesore, will be landscaped for the benefit of the local community and provide some valuable green space.

“Once completed it will provide an environmental enhancement at the gateway to the city centre that will add to the number of improvements and regeneration projects that are being carried out as part of the Swansea Strategic Regeneration Area.”

Commercial and residential property owners in the area of the former library are being contacted individually to raise awareness of the works.

The project has been funded by The Welsh Assembly Government in partnership with Swansea Council through the Swansea Strategic Regeneration Area.
