Lloyd: Organ Donation LCO interference could cost lives

Plaid Cymru AM Dr Dai Lloyd said:

“Years of work have gone into this issue yet only at this very late stage are people in Westminster raising these concerns. It shows a complete lack of respect for the Welsh government and the democratic will of the people of Wales. It appears that this is a clear attempt to try and block the actions of the Welsh government which has the support of charities and the public.

“I am pleased that the Health Minister has made a statement that she intends to move ahead with this process. It is a vitally important issue that will lead to many lives being saved. It is incredible that people in Westminster would aim to delay or scupper that bid. If ever there was a case for the need for Wales to take decisions for itself this is it.

“The difficult fact of the matter is that delays cost lives. Someone in Wales dies every 11 days waiting for a transplant. There is overwhelming support for a change to the system throughout Wales. This is clearly not a human rights issue. Anyone who does not wish to be an organ donor has the right to make that choice and opt out.

“The aim of this LCO is about ensuring that lives are not lost needlessly. That is surely a principle that should be supported and moved forward as quickly as possible.”
