Assembly Member for Wrexham Lesley Griffiths has welcomed the decision that will see a local post office remain in its current residence but has stressed a permanent solution is still required.
For the time being, Gwersyllt Post Office is staying put after proposals were made to relocate the service from its current location on Hope Street to a Spar and service station on the busy Mold Road dual carriageway.
Almost 2,500 people signed a petition against the proposals and Post Office officials have confirmed Spar has now reconsidered after the public backlash.
However, in a letter received by local AM Lesley Griffiths, a solution is still being sought as to where to locate the Post Office permanently due to the service currently being operated by a ‘temporary agent’.
Ms Griffiths, who attended a meeting of Gwersyllt Community Council this week where the item was discussed by councillors, commented:
“I commend the campaign in Gwersyllt for everything they have achieved so far but there is clearly a need for a permanent solution to be found.”
“It is important the service is accessible for local residents and moving to premises adjacent to a dual carriageway is clearly problematic and far from ideal.”
“New proposals will be put forward and will be subject to a further 6 week public consultation period.”
“Supporting local businesses bidding for the Post Office contract is undoubtedly the preferred scenario, however, it is vital to ensure the community does not lose the service altogether.”
