There is less than a month left for people to sign up for the opportunity of a lifetime to be involved in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Friday 23, March has been confirmed as the closing date for the recruitment of Cardiff Host Council Ambassadors, the title given to the official 2012 volunteers in Cardiff.
Cardiff is set to play an important role in the Games as the city is hosting Olympic football matches at the Millennium Stadium and providing pre-game training camps for a number of Olympic and Paralympic teams.
Selected Ambassadors will represent Cardiff by welcoming visiting spectators and teams to the city.
Volunteer roles will be diverse and could range from assisting South African sprint star Oscar ‘Blade Runner’ Pistorius with training at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium to directing spectators to the Millennium Stadium for Olympic football matches.
So far over 300 volunteers have registered their interest to become a Host Council Ambassador and the programme is looking to recruit a further 100 volunteers as the deadline approaches.
Sport.Cardiff has a state-of the-art online tool called the Volunteer Sports Bureau which enables people to access and sign up to volunteering opportunities across the city.
It enables volunteers to register and access a variety of opportunities at the click of a button whilst also providing a service for ‘providers’ of volunteer opportunities to post their placements on the site making them more accessible to a wider audience.
The site is accessible to people of all ages and abilities and volunteer opportunities are varied.
Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells said: “Cardiff is set to play an important role in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and it is essential that we represent our fantastic city through the volunteer programme.
“This is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for people all over the city to have a significant involvement in what is the greatest sporting spectacle in the world.
“As well as assisting the Council and London 2012, volunteers will gain valuable experience, learn new skills, meet people and enjoy themselves whilst giving something back to their community.”
