Long-standing volunteer crew member retires from Barry Dock RNLI lifeboat

Barry RNLICliff Murphy served as a volunteer with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s Barry Dock lifeboat from 1987 – 1994 as a crew member, and was involved in the saving of 26 lives in that time.

He later served as a Deputy Launching Officer from 2004 – 2009.

Gerry Adams, RNLI volunteer Press Officer, remembers the night when an armed man with psychiatric problems was holding and threatening the crew on the boat he was sailing. Cliff was in charge of the Barry Dock lifeboat station that night and had the task of coordinating the lifeboat crew and police while keeping HM Coastguard informed.

Peter Binding, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Barry Dock lifeboat station, said: ‘We are losing one of our most valuable volunteers’.
