Lord Coe Responds to Wrexham AM Torch Request

Assembly Member for Wrexham, Lesley Griffiths, has received a letter from Lord Sebastian Coe, in reply to a request for the Olympic Torch to be routed through Wrexham.

Last month, Lesley Griffiths wrote to Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London 2012 Olympic Organising Committee to put forward the case for the inclusion of Wrexham in the route of the 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.

In her letter, Lesley highlighted the sporting heritage of the town, the welcome the torch would receive, and the proximity to Wrexham of possible transit routes for the torch.

Lord Coe has now penned a response – which promises to pass on the letter to the body which makes the final call.

Lord Coe is to escalate Lesley’s request to the National Wales Regions Advisory Group, to make them ‘aware of (the) strong desire for the torch to visit’.

Lord Coe’s response also gave details how people can nominate ‘inspirational’ people to help carry the torch – and proposes that people from Wrexham should consider nominating individuals from their community.

Commenting, Lesley said:

“I am pleased I have received a response from Lord Coe and hope this will add weight to the many voices calling for Wrexham to be included in the route of the Olympic Torch Relay.

“We could still see the relay routed here as the full details have not yet been agreed. The more the Olympic Organising Committee is aware of the welcome the torch would receive here in Wrexham, the better – which is why I have also called on Wrexham Council to add their backing.

“I would also like to encourage people in Wrexham to think about nominating inspirational people from their community to help carry the torch. This would be a once in a lifetime opportunity, and it would be great to see the community spirit of Wrexham represented in this way.”

If you think someone from your community deserves to be nominated to carry the torch as part of LOGOCs ‘moment to shine’, you can nominate at: www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay.
