Lucas: Women in Wrexham have Lost More than Four Per Cent of their Weekly Earnings

424px-Ian_LucasWomen in Wrexham have lost more than four per cent of their average weekly earnings since the coalition Government came to power.

A Parliamentary question put down by Wrexham MP Ian Lucas shows that the median average weekly wage for women in Wrexham has fallen by 4.6 per cent since April 2010 and at one point had dropped by almost £40 a week. Both men and women in Wrexham saw wages fall between 2010 and 2013, but while men’s wages have recovered, women are still an average of £15 less each week than they did four years ago.

Mr Lucas has described the fall as a scandal and said he will try to highlight to Ministers during the debates following the Budget this week.

He said: “The Government’s failure to secure the growth they promised has hit everyone in the pocket – but these figures show that women in Wrexham are seeing their weekly wages particularly hard hit.

“I believe that it is a scandal that this is happening in 2014, and the changes should shame the Government. Ministers should explain to the women of Wrexham why they should be paid almost five per cent less than they were four years ago.”
