Major Fforestfach fire causing traffic gridlock

A major fire incident in the Fforestfach area of Swansea is causing traffic gridlock in the area today (Thursday).

The fire is at the former Mettoys factory site near to Swansea Council’s park and ride site at Fforestfach.

Carmarthen Road is closed between the Marquis Arms and the Tesco lights at Fforestfach retail park.

At the moment there is very heavy traffic congestion in the area and the park and ride site is closed. Vehicles parked at the park and ride site will not be allowed access at this time. A decision will be made later on when the site will re-open.

The public is urged to stay away from the area. Residents are being advised to close their windows and stay indoors.

So far Queensway in Fforestfach has been evacuated along with a small area of Carmarthen Road and an industrial site at Waunfach Close.

Many of the coaches operated by Let’s Go Travel, Swansea Bus and M & J Travel have been prevented from leaving the depot due to the incident.

As a consequence it’s expected there will be disruption to a number of school services this afternoon.

However teachers at schools in the area will remain with pupils until all of them have been picked up.
