Making shore north Wales is clean

A major clean-up operation will target washed up waste on the North Wales shoreline.

A multi-agency week-long coastal clean-up will be held between May 24 – 28 as part of the Welsh Assembly’s Tidy Towns Initiative. Communities across North Wales will also take the chance to spruce up their towns.

Members of the public are being urged to join the big spring clean, and help make their local community a clean and pleasant place.

Among the organisations taking part will be Flintshire County Council, Denbighshire County Council, Conwy County Borough Council, Gwynedd Council, Isle of Anglesey County Council and Keep Wales Tidy.

The aim of the week-long clean-up is to remove litter and rubbish from the shores of North Wales. It’s also hoped that the events will be a great way of raising awareness about the dangers of throwing litter and fly-tipping.

Jane Davidson, Environment Minister for the Welsh Assembly Government said: “I am committed to protecting Wales’ unique environment, and that is why I have agreed £4m of funding again this year for Tidy Towns projects.

“The Big Spring Clean is a great example of how Tidy Towns brings communities together to make a real difference to their local area. It isn’t just our coasts that need protecting though. I believe that we all have a responsibility to look after our surroundings wherever we live, and to conserve Wales’ natural beauty for future generations.”

The Tidy Towns initiative was created to improve local environmental quality and tackle issues such as litter, dog fouling and fly tipping.

The North Wales coastline and beaches needs our protection – not only does litter make the coast look untidy and dirty, it can be dangerous to wildlife and poses very real health risks. It’s estimated that over 100,000 marine animals die each year from entanglement and ingestion of plastic.

Gruff Jones, North Wales Community Project Manager for Keep Wales Tidy, said: “We hope this clean up event will be a great opportunity to work in partnership with local residents to improve the local environment. So if you enjoy a walk down to the beach, or perhaps you enjoy fishing or water sports such as surfing, why not join one of the events which has been organised in you area? We really need your help to ensure that this event is a success, why not join us and do your bit to keep your local coastline clean and tidy?”

This clean-up is sponsored by the Helping Hands Company, all groups who take part in a clean up will be entered into a prize draw, as Carly Dalley of The Helping Hand Company explained: “As a Keep Wales Tidy Sponsor we are delighted to be now sponsoring the first collaborative Beach Clean event in North Wales! Register your clean up group now to be entered into a cash prize draw to help keep your area clean and green.”

Spaces are limited for these events.
