Mardi Gras comes of age

Safer Wales have told us that they are delighted that after over 10 years as a Safer Wales project the Cardiff-Wales LGBT Mardi Gras has been set up as a separate company with its own management team.

The Mardi Gras management team, will be led by Richard Newton as Chair and Lisa Buckley as Deputy Chair with an experienced, dedicated and yet still unpaid team of volunteers. This team has been formed principally from the event committee that hosted the successful 10th Mardi Gras over August Bank Holiday weekend in 2009.

Barbara Natasegara, Chief Executive of Safer Wales commented “I’ve been personally involved with the event since the beginning in 1999 when 5,000 people attended.  With the growth of the event to a consistent attendance of 40,000 and a successful 10th event in 2009 we are delighted to support the Mardi Gras team in setting themselves up as a completely separate company.

“We wish the team continued success and will of course be on the sidelines to offer advice if needed.”

Richard Newton, Mardi Gras chair added “This is an exciting move for the Mardi Gras which has become one of Cardiff’s major attractions in recent years.  Having seen the event grow, we really feel we are ready to move on.  All of the new management team at Mardi Gras can’t wait for 4th September 2010 for this year’s event”.
