Church Village Bypass engineers welcomed the Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to the construction site this week where he expressed his pleasure at the excellent work being undertaken to ensure the major development opens on schedule later this year.
Cllr Russell Roberts and the Council’s Head of Strategy Christian Hanagan were met by officers of Costain, who are the contractors for the £90million project being built to alleviate the congestion experienced on the main road between Talbot Green and Pontypridd.
Church Village Bypass – the largest highway scheme currently being undertaken by any local authority in the UK – is seen as being economically important not only to its neighbouring communities, but the entire county borough.
Cllr Roberts said: “The massive amount of work already achieved in delivering this hugely significant project is testimony to the dedication and sheer hard work of Council officers, their contractors Costain and all those members of the partnership team who are involved.
“The Bypass is vitally needed to overcome the severe congestion faced by the communities of Church Village, Tonteg, Llantwit Fardre and Efail Isaf and will also provide an important strategic link from Llantrisant, Talbot Green and the A4119 /M4 to Pontypridd and the A470.
“This is why we as a Council lobbied so hard for the funding from the Welsh Assembly Government and we are pleased to be delivering this project with construction company Costain.
“As always we remain mindful of the local residents during the construction phase and want to thank them – and local commuters – for their patience and co-operation as we continue to try and minimize disruption as far as possible.
“Despite episodes of very poor weather, I am pleased to see that the entire project remains well on schedule for its autumn 2010 completion and the lasting benefits it will bring are immeasurable.”
Residents and commuters will continue to see various phases of completion to the project in the weeks and months ahead.
At the end of April, the Nant Dowlais roundabout will be opened for traffic travelling to and from Nant Dowlais that will allow tie-in works for the Efail Isaf access road that will open in May. Also, the three pedestrian footbridges will be delivered during the month of April.
