Mayor welcomes international students

Pontyclun schoolchildren welcomed their new-found friends from across Europe to Rhondda Cynon Taf this month.

Y Pant School is the only one in Wales to secure funding to take part in the Cormenius programme, which is funded by the British Council to celebrate cultural diversity across Europe.

As a result of the programme, pupils from Y Pant have already visited a school in Italy and are planning a trip to Sweden in the new year. Teachers from the participating schools have also met in Germany.

The latest part of the programme saw pupils from the other participating schools –

Regionale Scholengemeenschap ‘t Rijks op Zoom in the Netherlands, I.S.I.S. Foresi in Portoferraio Italy, gen op Zoom in the Netherlands, Lic Ling Art L.B. Alberti Alma mater Centro, Orient.scol in Piombino, Italy and Carlshojdskolan, Umea in Sweden, visit RCT.

One of the highlights of their trip was a visit to the Mayor’s Parlour in the Municipal Buildings in Pontypridd, where the visitors learned all about life in Rhondda Cynon Taf and the role of Mayor.

Mayor Cllr Simon Lloyd said: “It was an honour to welcome the school children from across Europe and I hope they are enjoying their stay in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

“It is important for our future generations to understand and celebrate the diversity of different cultures and I am so pleased Y Pant secured the funding from the British Council to take part in the Cormenius programme and benefit from links across Europe.”
