Volunteers who run Community Centres in the Vale of Glamorgan have been commended at a special reception hosted by a fellow volunteer, the Vale Mayor Cllr Emlyn Williams.
All of the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s 22 Community Centres are run by volunteers whose invaluable commitment is making a huge difference in their local communities. Cllr Williams leads by example as he takes time out to be the treasurer of Cwm Talwg Community Centre in Barry, while he is also a committee member of St Nicholas Community Centre.
More than 600 people a week use some of the centres, where they enjoy a fun range of affordable activities such as playgroups, youth clubs, yoga, karate, dancing, bingo, parties, social events and various hobbies.
A total of 12 centres were represented at the special evening reception, held in the Mayor’s Parlour at the Town Hall in Barry, and Cllr Williams said: “Without these individuals giving up their time to expertly run the centres, a large range of activities would not take place. I’d like to thank them all for the huge contribution they have made during the last year, which I know is much appreciated by local residents.”
The Vale Council’s community development officer Siân Vaughan, who co-ordinates the volunteers, said: “They all thoroughly deserve recognition for their tremendous hard work. The centres have traditionally been focal points at the heart of communities and I hope that even greater numbers will get involved in their local community centres during this next year, perhaps by taking part in one of the activities on offer for all ages, or even by setting up your own club.”
