Medical students reach national rugby final

Medical students from Cardiff University will take to the pitch of one of Wales’ most famous rugby grounds for the final of a national rugby competition.

On Saturday 1st May 2010 at 3.00pm Cardiff Medicals RFC will take on Nottingham Medics at Cardiff Arms Park in the culmination of the National Association of Medical Schools Rugby Union (NAMS) Cup.

Cardiff Medicals have had an excellent season to date having already beaten the United London Hospitals and combined Dublin Medics. They beat Birmingham Medics to reach this years’ final which, if successful, will be their twelfth in succession.

Cardiff Coach Huw Davies said: “This is my 16th season coaching Cardiff Medicals but we have never had the opportunity to play on such a prestigious ground. We are looking forward to defending our title and we are very grateful to the Dean of the School of Medicine and Cardiff University Athletic Union for their outstanding support.”

More than 1000 spectators are expected to attend the game, including current students and alumni from the University as well as the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. International players past and present who studied at the University will also be turning out in support of the Cardiff side.

All profits from the final will go towards the Dr Jack Matthews Scholarship – a joint campaign between the University’s School of Medicine and Cardiff Medicals RFC to provide financial support for the medics of the future through scholarships, bursaries and prizes.

The first recipients of the Dr Jack Matthews scholarships were announced in late 2009 and have enabled Cardiff medical students to help support charity projects in some of the world’s most underdeveloped healthcare systems.

The NAMS final kicks off at 15.00 on 1st May.  Tickets cost £5 and are available from the Deanery in the School of Medicine or from the online box office at Cardiff University Students Union.
