Organisers behind the Mynydd Isa Field for Youth (MIFFY) say the new park and recreational area’s first summer holiday has been a roaring success.
MIFFY was opened by the Duke of Westminster in mid July and since then the field has been permanently busy, with children and people of all ages using it throughout the summer.
“Everyone’s been involved in making this happen; it’s a great example of people pulling together for the good of the community. We’ve had so much help from so many organisations. Flintshire County Council has given us fantastic support too – from the first day we discussed our plans with officers, we’ve had the Council’s help all the way through. But the emphasis has been on team work – we couldn’t have achieved this without the Council and they couldn’t have done it without us.”
Alan Roberts is the Play Unit Manager at Flintshire County Council:
“This is a great example of what a community space should be – it caters for all age groups, and there’s even a space for dog walkers too. The Council has been proud to be involved in this partnership, and the MIFFY committee members have been the key to the community securing this fantastic space.”
MIFFY also would not have been possible without major financial contributions from a range of organisations; from the Big Lottery Fund – People and Places, Argoed Community Council, the Landfill Communities Fund of Waste Recycling Group administered by the Environmental Body, Waste Recycling Environment, Flintshire Community Trust and Flintshire Local Voluntary Council.
North Wales Police and Flintshire Neighbourhood Watch Association have also been heavily involved throughout the project.
Councillor Hilary McGuill, who represents Mynydd Isa, said:
“MIFFY has been a fantastic success, and I’m so proud that everyone’s worked so hard to make this happen. The proof has been in the pudding – people are so keen to use this facility that sometimes you can even see the children queuing up to have a go on some of the rides!”
15 year old Jake Williams is the vice chair of the MIFFY committee:
“I’ve been involved since the start and it’s fantastic for all of us in Mynydd Isa, and I’ve even heard of people coming to use it from outside the area. I’d definitely say it’s been a successful first summer for us, and I think people will use it in the winter too.”
Financial and technical contributions have also come from the Grosvenor Garden Centre, Cambian Healthcare, Synthite Industries, Mondi Packaging, Castle Cement, Clwyd Community Chest, Rose Lane Livery and Thorncliffe Building Supplies.
Further equipment is planned for the near future, including outdoor exercise equipment for adults and an information board explaining the history of the Bonc.
