Commenting on Labour’s re-announcement of £50million for an Intermediate Care Fund to help older people live independently for longer, Darren Millar AM, Shadow Minister for Older People, said:

“This cynical re-announcement, on the eve of the European elections, of recycled money for older people’s services is a desperate ploy for votes.

“Many older people have faced the brunt of Labour’s record-breaking budget cuts to the Welsh NHS, with community hospital closures and service downgrades.

“Preventing people who, with support, are capable of living independently from going into long-term care, is key to ensuring that older people have the dignity and respect they deserve.

“Ensuring that older people live in an appropriate care setting avoids unnecessary distress to them and their families, prevents older people from being seen as a burden and helps keep their minds and bodies active.

“This is yet another example of Carwyn Jones’ Labour Government appearing to abuse its position by repackaging old policies and announcements to prop up its core vote in Thursday’s EU elections.”
