Millar: No Smoking Day message

Shadow Minister for Health Darren Millar AM has called for renewed efforts to deal with the number of smokers in Wales.

Speaking on No Smoking Day 2012, Mr Millar has urged the Welsh Government not to focus on one issue alone.

He said:

“While recent efforts have rightly highlighted the dangers of smoking in the car, there is a real risk of Wales losing sight of education targeted at potential young smokers in particular. We must not get sidelined on one issue alone for the remainder of this Assembly term.

“Stop Smoking Wales has to make sure it works with health boards across Wales on a variety of measures aimed at education and cessation treatment for all walks of life.

“I would like to see a national campaign in the very near future – with community pharmacy involvement – aimed at both helping adults quit and aiding young people in danger of addiction.

“Smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death and disease, and one of the main causes of health inequality in Wales. Continued efforts to tackle it should encompass a wide range of ideas and methods.”
