Moelfre RNLI inshore lifeboat crew assist broken down 17 foot fishing boat

The Moelfre RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched on 31 August at 3.42pm to reports of a vessel with engine failure in Benllech Bay.

The volunteer lifeboat crew quickly plotted the casualty’s position given by the coastguard, and identified it to be five miles to the north of Moelfre island.

Helmsman Vincent Jones immediately altered his course and they were alongside the stricken vessel within 20 minutes.

The boat with two local men on board were towed back to the Moelfre RNLI lifeboat station were their engine was assessed by the station mechanic and diagnosed as a battery problem.

It was re-started and the vessel proceeded back to Bull Bay safely.

Moelfre RNLI Lifeboat Station Press Officer Dave Massey said: ‘The RNLI train all its volunteer lifeboat crews in various skills, and to a high standard in navigation. The crew of the broken down boat should be praised for having all the appropriate safety equipment on board, they were both wearing lifejackets and had made initial contact with the Coastguard via their VHF radio. Once they saw the inshore lifeboat approaching they deployed an orange smoke flair to alert the lifeboat crew of their location’.

The Moelfre coastguard team were also on Lligwy beach observing the casualty.
