Moelfre RNLI inshore lifeboat crew carry out second rescue in two days

The Moelfre RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched Friday to assist a broken down 15 foot speed boat half a mile off the Moelfre lifeboat station.

The two male adults, both in their twenties from Ormskirk, had just started fishing when their engine failed causing them to drift quickly out to sea in the strong, 25 knot wind and choppy sea.

The Moelfre inshore lifeboat launched at 4pm and was along side the casualty within a minute. The Volunteer lifeboat crew assessed the situation and attached a tow rope to the broken down speed boat. They then proceeded to tow them into Traeth Bychan, where the Coastguard team were waiting.

Moelfre RNLI Lifeboat Station Press Officer Dave Massey said:

‘The two occupants of the speed boat were extremely lucky today, their only means of raising the alarm was via their mobile phone. It was very fortunate for them that some of the Moelfre lifeboat crew were in the station and noticed them waving for help whilst attempting to row against the strong wind.’

Dave continues:

‘They did have lifejackets on board but did not have any distress flairs or VHF radio to contact the Coastguard directly and request assistance. We would always advise people to have in date red distress flairs and a VHF radio in their boat, and know how to use it’.
