Monmouthshire: Maintaining services during the current weather conditions

Monmouthshire County Council has decided to prioritise efforts on re-opening the County’s four Comprehensive schools from Monday. This is to allow students to take their A/S levels.

A spokesperson said:
“A/S Levels are vital and we don’t want students to be disadvantaged in any way. So we’ll be working over the weekend to ensure safe access to our four comprehensive schools. I understand the parents with children in other schools are keen for their children to start lessons again, but I am sure they will understand that if our young people can’t sit their A/S Levels now, they will have to wait until the summer – which could delay their future plans for work or University.”

They continued:
“We can’t guarantee success, but our crews will be working through the weekend to make this happen. If it does snow again, we’ll be there to continue to try and ensure safe access.”

Up to date information on school closures can be found on the council’s web site – www.monmouthshire.gov.uk. They also have a telephone information line, giving pre-recorded updates on closures (01633 64 4995).

Providing it doesn’t snow again at the weekend, we will also be working to get refuse collection services working again from Monday. Should we be successful, the collections will follow a standard week’s pattern.

They will also make a decision on Monday as to whether we can safely transport service users to our day services for vulnerable adults.

Cllr Peter Fox, Leader of Monmouthshire County Council, said:

“We understand the concern and frustration of our residents, but the current service restrictions must be seen in the context of this being the longest period of wintry weather for 30 years. Public and private sector services throughout the UK have been seriously affected and the nationwide shortage of road salt that has resulted from the exceptionally long period of cold and snow has made travel on many residential roads difficult.

We hope to resume full services next week but, like any other service provider that operates outside, our services could be further affected by continued severe weather.”
